A tonneau cover protects both the load bed of a pickup, plus its cargo, from weather, general wear and tear, dust and wind, as well as prying eyes, whilst still preserving classic pickup style and giving full access. The removal of wind drag - caused by airstreams swirling around an open truck bed when driving - also improves the vehicle’s overall fuel economy, often estimated to be up to 15%. They are available in several types and models to suit user requirements and aesthetic preferences.
Hard Tonneau Covers
In general, a hard pickup tonneau cover can be a one-piece lid which is moved upwards by gas struts (a lift up), or a slat construction that is retracted by means of rolling up (roller shutter) or folding (such as tri-folding). Sturdy aluminium/alloy slats or rigid vinyl give the roller shutter and folding types of pickup tonneau cover structure, strength and security.
Soft Tonneau Covers
Soft tonneau covers offer a cost saving for pickup owners who still want to protect and secure a pickup load bed. They are available as roll-up, fold up, hooked or press snap fastening covers, all of which give fast access to the load bed and add hardly any weight to the vehicle.

By using robust gas struts underneath the rear section, a lift-up type tonneau cover opens using pivot hinges for access to the load bed. The lid can be colour coded to match the body colour.
